Vietnam’s first “open zoo,” where animals will not be kept in cages, is set to open by the end of the year.
The zoo is part of Dai Nam Tourism World, a new theme park under construction in the southern province of Binh Duong, 15km from Ho Chi Minh City.
The open zoo, construction of which began in June last year, will be home to rare animals that are not kept in typical caged enclosures, said Tran Dang Trung, the zoo’s CEO.
The zoo will be similar to other open zoos like Singapore’s, where animals are separated from the visitors by dry or wet moats. The Singapore Zoo separates particularly dangerous animals with glassed enclosures.
The zoo plans to offer night safaris and animal shows.
Last year, the zoo bought two white lions for US$70,000 and two hippopotamuses for $150,000 from South Africa.
In August, a batch of rare animals like zebras, African weasels and gnus would be imported, Trung said.
The locally-owned $186 million Dai Nam theme park will include an entertainment complex, hotels, an artificial beach and other leisure facilities.
